How to Use the Tip Calculator
Tipping can sometimes be confusing, especially when you need to split the bill among a large group of people. Our Tip Calculator simplifies the process. Just enter your bill amount, choose your desired tip percentage, and input the number of people in your party. The calculator will instantly show you the total tip, the final bill, and exactly how much each person needs to pay.
Standard Tipping Etiquette
Tipping customs vary wildly across the globe. In the United States, tipping is a standard practice and makes up a significant portion of a server's income. Here is a general guide to tipping in the US:
- 15%: For average or adequate service.
- 18%: For good or standard service. Many restaurants automatically add an 18% gratuity for large parties (usually 6 or more).
- 20% or more: For excellent, above-and-beyond service.
- 10%: For poor service. Note that leaving no tip at all is considered highly offensive and usually only reserved for completely unacceptable service.
Tipping in Other Scenarios
While sit-down restaurants are the most common place we tip, here are standard rates for other services:
- Bartenders: $1 to $2 per drink, or 15% - 20% of the bar tab.
- Food Delivery: 10% - 15% of the bill, or a minimum of $3 - $5.
- Takeout: Tipping is optional, but 10% is polite for large or complicated orders.
- Rideshare/Taxis: 15% - 20% of the fare.
- Hair Salons: 15% - 20% to the stylist.
