TDEE Calculator

Discover your Total Daily Energy Expenditure. Understand exactly how many calories your body burns based on your physical traits and lifestyle activity level.

Physiological Data

TDEE is the amount of energy you burn in 24 hours. To lose weight, aim for **TDEE - 500**. To gain weight, aim for **TDEE + 500**.

The Physics of Energy Balance

Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) is the cornerstone of any effective weight management or fitness transformation plan.

What is TDEE?

TDEE represents the total number of calories your body burns in a 24-hour period. It is comprised of four primary components: your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR), the Thermic Effect of Food (TEF), Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis (NEAT), and the Thermic Effect of Activity (TEA).

By calculating this figure accurately, you can establish your "Maintenance Calories"—the intake level at which your weight remains stable. From this baseline, you can create a deficit for weight loss or a surplus for muscle growth.

Energy Components:

  • BMR (70%): Calories burned at total rest
  • NEAT (15%): Daily movement (walking, fidgeting)
  • TEF (10%): Digestion and absorption of food
  • TEA (5%): Formal exercise and training sessions

Calculating Your Baseline

Our calculator uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, widely considered the most accurate clinical formula for estimating metabolic rate in modern sedentary and active populations.

Sedentary

Little to no exercise. Desk jobs. TDEE = BMR x 1.2. This is the starting point for most office workers.

Moderate

Moderate exercise 3-5 days/week. TDEE = BMR x 1.55. Ideal for consistent gym-goers.

Athletic

Heavy exercise 6-7 days/week. TDEE = BMR x 1.725. Reserved for intense training or physical labor.

Optimizing Your Strategy

The 500 Rule

A daily deficit of 500 calories equates to roughly 1lb of fat loss per week—the sustainable industry gold standard.

Protein Sparing

During a cut, high protein intake (1g/lb of lean mass) is vital to ensure weight loss comes from fat, not muscle tissue.

Lean Bulking

Gaining muscle requires a surplus, but exceeding 500 calories above TDEE often leads to excessive fat storage.

Metabolic Adaptation

As you lose weight, your TDEE will naturally decrease. Recalculate your requirements every 5-10 lbs of change.

Accuracy & Nuance

TDEE calculators provide an excellent mathematical estimate, but biological reality can vary by 10-15% based on hormonal health, muscle density, and genetic factors.

The best approach is to use this result as a starting point, track your daily weight and caloric intake for 2-3 weeks, and then adjust based on real-world results. If you aren't losing weight at your "cutting" calories, your true TDEE may be slightly lower.
