Understanding Time Math

Unlike standard decimal mathematics which operates in base-10, time operates in base-60 (sexagesimal system). This makes manual addition and subtraction of hours, minutes, and seconds tedious and prone to errors.

Base-60 Explained

When adding times, if the minutes exceed 59, they roll over into the hours column (e.g., 40 minutes + 30 minutes = 1 hour and 10 minutes, not 70 minutes). A time calculator handles this carry-over logic automatically.

How the calculation works

Times add by converting everything to minutes, then converting back.

Hours = total minutes ÷ 60 Remaining minutes = total minutes mod 60

A sum past 24 hours can stay as hours or roll into days.

Worked example: 2 h 45 m plus 1 h 30 m

  1. Minutes = 2×60 + 45 + 1×60 + 30 = 255.
  2. 255 ÷ 60 = 4 hours with 15 minutes left.
  3. Sum = 4 hours 15 minutes.
