Calendar Days vs. Business Days
When counting days, it is important to distinguish between Calendar Days and Business Days (also known as working days). This distinction is heavily used in legal contracts, shipping estimations, and project management.
Calendar Days
Calendar days refer to every day on the calendar, including weekends (Saturday and Sunday) and national holidays. If a contract states that you have "30 days" to respond, it almost universally means 30 calendar days.
Business Days
Business days typically refer to Monday through Friday. They exclude weekends and public holidays. When an online store claims "shipping takes 3-5 business days," an order placed on Friday might not arrive until the following Thursday or Friday.
The Impact of Leap Years
A standard year on the Gregorian calendar has 365 days. However, because it takes the Earth approximately 365.2422 days to orbit the Sun, a "Leap Year" containing 366 days is introduced every four years to keep our calendar in alignment with the Earth's revolutions.
During a leap year, an extra day is added to the end of February (February 29). This calculator fully accounts for leap years. For example, if you calculate the days between January 1, 2024 and December 31, 2024, it will correctly output 365 days (or 366 if you select "Include end day"), whereas doing the same for 2023 would output 364 (or 365).
