What is Body Fat Percentage?

Your Body Fat Percentage (BFP) is the total mass of fat divided by total body mass, multiplied by 100. This includes both essential body fat (necessary for life and reproductive functions) and storage body fat.

Unlike BMI, which only considers weight and height, body fat percentage reveals what your weight is actually made of. Two people of the same height and weight can have radically different health profiles if one has 15% body fat and the other has 30%.

Essential Fat

The minimum amount of fat required for physiological function (2-5% for men, 10-13% for women).

Measurement Protocol

For the most accurate result, take measurements on the bare skin. The tape should be snug but not compressing the skin.

  • Neck: Measured just below the larynx, sloping slightly downward to the front.
  • Waist: For men, at the navel; for women, at the narrowest point.
  • Hips (Women): At the widest point of the buttocks.

While the ACE table provides general health categories, "ideal" body fat often shifts as we age. The Jackson & Pollock standard provides a more age-specific target for fitness enthusiasts.

Body fat, also known as adipose tissue, is a vital part of the human body. It serves as energy storage, provides insulation, and protects internal organs. However, the amount and type of body fat can have significant health implications.

Essential vs. Storage Fat

Essential fat is required for normal physiological function. In men, this is approximately 2–5%, while in women, it is significantly higher (10–13%) due to childbearing and hormonal functions.

Storage fat is fat that accumulates in adipose tissue, located either subcutaneously (under the skin) or viscerally (around organs). While some storage fat is healthy, an excess—particularly visceral fat—is a primary indicator of metabolic disease.

Measuring Body Fat Percentage

There are many ways to estimate body fat, ranging from simple calculations to advanced medical imaging.

U.S. Navy Method

Developed by the Naval Health Research Center, this method is one of the most widely used circumference-based estimates. It requires only a tape measure and provides a high degree of accuracy for the general population.

Measurement Requirements:

  • Height: Measured without shoes, standing straight.
  • Neck: Measured below the larynx, with the tape sloping slightly downward to the front.
  • Waist: For men, measure at the navel; for women, at the narrowest part of the abdomen.
  • Hips (Women only): Measured at the widest part of the buttocks.

The calculations involve logarithmic equations to estimate body density:

For Men (US Units):
BFP = 86.010 × log10(waist - neck) - 70.041 × log10(height) + 36.76
For Women (US Units):
BFP = 163.205 × log10(waist + hip - neck) - 97.684 × log10(height) - 78.387

BMI Method (Alternative)

The BMI method provides a rough estimate using height and weight. While useful for large population studies, it often fails for individuals with high muscle mass (who may have a high BMI but low body fat).
