Understanding Alcohol Metabolism
Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) is the primary metric used to quantify intoxication. Understanding how your body processes ethanol is critical for safety and health.
The Widmark Formula
Our calculator utilizes the Widmark Formula, the gold standard for clinical BAC estimation. This formula accounts for the total mass of alcohol consumed, the user's body weight, and a gender-specific distribution constant—since alcohol is water-soluble and muscle tissue contains more water than fat tissue.
Men generally have a higher percentage of water in their bodies (approx. 68% vs. 55% for women), meaning alcohol is more diluted in men, resulting in a lower BAC for the same amount of alcohol consumed per pound of body weight.
Variable Impact Factors:
- • Stomach Content: Food slows alcohol absorption.
- • Hydration: Dehydration increases BAC concentration.
- • Metabolism: Genetics and liver health vary.
- • Rate: Rapid drinking spikes BAC faster.
- • Medication: Certain drugs multiply impairment.
Physiological Impairment Stages
As BAC levels rise, the central nervous system suffers progressive depression. This affects judgment, motor control, and ultimately life-sustaining functions.
Relaxation and warmth. Subtle loss of coordination and tracking ability. Most social drinkers stop here.
The legal limit for DUI in many US states. Significant loss of balance, speech, and reaction time.
Severe impairment. Vomiting, blackouts, and potential respiratory depression. Medical emergency threshold.
The Elimination Process
Linear Burn-off
Alcohol is eliminated at a relatively constant rate of approx. **0.015% per hour**. Nothing can speed this up.
Myths & Sobriety
Coffee, cold showers, or exercise do not reduce BAC. They may make you an "alert drunk," but impairment remains the same.
Liver Function
90% of alcohol is processed by the liver. Hydration and rest are the only ways to support your body's recovery.
Standard Drink Units
12oz beer = 5oz wine = 1.5oz spirits. All contain approx. 14g of pure ethanol in the United States.
Critical Disclaimer
This calculator provides an estimate only and should not be used to determine your ability to drive or perform complex tasks. BAC is affected by numerous factors that no software can fully account for, including metabolic speed, health status, and food intake.
If you have consumed any alcohol, use a ride-sharing service or a designated driver. Safety is the only priority.
