Pre-Tax vs. Post-Tax Tipping

One of the most common debates when dining out in North America is whether you should calculate the tip based on the pre-tax subtotal or the post-tax total.

Etiquette experts generally agree that a tip should be calculated on the pre-tax amount. The logic is simple: a tip is a reward for the quality of service provided by the staff, and the server did not provide the "service" of taxing your meal on behalf of the government. Tipping on top of a tax is effectively paying a tax on a tax. However, many consumers find it mathematically easier to just tip on the final bill total, which is perfectly acceptable and often results in a slightly more generous tip for the server.

Tipping in North America

In the United States and Canada, tipping is highly expected and forms a significant portion of a server's income due to lower minimum wages for tipped employees.

15% - Average/Standard service
18% - Good service (becoming the new standard)
20%+ - Excellent, above-and-beyond service
10% - Subpar service

Tipping in Europe & Asia

Tipping customs vary wildly outside of North America. It's always best to research your specific destination.

Europe:Often included as a "service charge" on the bill. If not, leaving a 5-10% tip or rounding up the bill is appreciated.

Asia:In countries like Japan and South Korea, tipping is rarely expected and can sometimes be considered mildly insulting. In tourist-heavy areas of Southeast Asia, a 10% tip is becoming more common.

Automatic Gratuities

Always check your receipt before applying a tip. Many restaurants will automatically apply a gratuity (usually 18%) for large parties, typically groups of 6 or more. If an automatic gratuity is already included, you do not need to leave an additional tip unless you feel the service was exceptionally outstanding.
