The MET Methodology
MET stands for Metabolic Equivalent of Task. It is a physiological measure used to express the energy cost of physical activities as a multiple of the resting metabolic rate.
Example: If you weigh 70kg and go for a 1-hour moderate run (MET 10), you burn approximately 700 calories (1 × 10 × 70).
Accuracy & Limitations
While the MET-based system is the global standard for activity tracking, it is important to realize it provides estimates, not exact measurements.
The baseline 1 MET value (3.5 ml oxygen/kg/min) is based on a 40-year-old, 70kg male. For individuals who deviate significantly from this profile—such as the elderly, highly muscular athletes, or those with metabolic conditions—the baseline itself may be off by up to 20-30%.
For clinical-grade accuracy, indirect calorimetry (measuring oxygen/CO2) is required.
