Understanding Pace
Pace is the rate of activity or movement, and it is usually measured as the time it takes to cover a specific distance. Unlike speed (distance/time), pace is measured as time/distance (e.g., minutes per mile or minutes per kilometer).
For runners and endurance athletes, pace is the primary metric used to gauge effort and predict finish times. Maintaining a consistent pace is often the key to achieving a "Personal Best" (PB) in racing events.

Training through Pace and Heart Rate
Heart rate training is a popular way to monitor effort. By understanding your heart rate zones, you can tailor your pace to ensure you're training the right energy systems (aerobic vs. anaerobic).
Aerobic Training
Generally 60-80% of your Maximum Heart Rate. This is sustainable for long periods and improves cardiovascular efficiency. Most "base miles" should be run at this intensity.
Anaerobic Training
Above 80-90% of Max HR. This is high-intensity interval training (HIIT). It improves speed and power but cannot be sustained for long as lactic acid builds up in the muscles.
How to Calculate Max Heart Rate?
The most common formula is: 220 - Age = Estimated Max HR. While this is a general estimate, it provides a functional baseline for most individuals to set their training zones.
Modern Wisdom: Negative Splits
A common strategy among elite marathoners is running "negative splits." This means running the second half of the race faster than the first. This requires immense discipline and a deep understanding of your pace early on, preventing you from "bonking" (running out of glycogen) later in the race.
